OUT-JAKES

I have a tremendous amount of fun creating my feature series called “Out-Jakes”. I’ve spent years obsessed with innovation, entrepreneurship, non-profits, and interesting subcultures.

One of the main reasons I created this series was because of the show “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.”. I have vivid memories of watching Fred Rogers go out into the community, or bring folks onto his show that represent a broad spectrum of occupations or topics. I remember it being my favorite parts of the show.

When I was around 6 or 7 years old, I was drawing on paper while watching an episode of Mr. Rogers. He was drawing too, and scribbling what looked like a rainbow. Then, he quickly stood up and showed a video of how crayons were made. Those 5 minutes were captivating to me, and a strong memory of mine to this day.

It was in that moment I realized the world was big, that I knew very little, and it almost seemed magical to have a crayon in my hand as he discussed it’s creation. I was curious.

Over the years my willingness to explore new ideas and seek out experts — a with a genuine curiosity, explore their occupations, hobbies, and interests has only grown.

It has been a dream of mine to try lots of new things. Life is short. I hope to use “Out-Jakes” to highlight how magical the world around us can be, and in the spirit of Fred Rogers, share these stories with you.

"The media shows the tiniest percentage of what people do. There are millions and millions of people doing wonderful things all over the world, and they're generally not the ones being touted in the news." - Fred Rogers. (Crayon Video)

Out Jakes Episode #2 - Owen Performance Horses

I had an amazing experience learning about “performance horses” and horse training. Alex Owen put me to work in various ways to give me a taste of daily life, and I had a chance to ride an awesome horse, my “co-star” Max.
